September to Remember

Make this a September to remember! Fall officially begins next week, but let’s face it, many of us have already gotten into harvest-mode and are fully prepared for sweater weather! If you haven’t experienced an autumn in the Triangle yet, you’re in for a treat! From tailgating at one of our local universities’ football games to getting down at the Wide Open Bluegrass festival, this season is about so much more than pumpkin spiced things-though it doesn’t get much better than a pumpkin flavored Krispy Kreme!

Bull City residents can kick off the fall festivities when this weekend brings back CenterFest. For over forty years, this art and the community-focused street festival has brought Downtown Durham to life with arts, crafts, entertainment, food, and fun. Dozens of artists from across the country will display their works in clay, drawing, glass blowing, printmaking, photography, painting, jewelry, and more!

SPARKcon will also be delighting Triangle residents this weekend. This interdisciplinary art and design festival will fill Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street, public spaces, clubs, and stages with art, music, dance, film, fashion, design and more from September 14th-17th. SPARKcon showcases local cultural richness through an open-source approach to collaboration and cross pollination. It’s completely grassroots and by the people for the people!

Experience new cultures at Morrisville’s East Meets West Food Festival on September 23rd, when the town will celebrate with a day of food and music from around the world. Dozens of local restaurants will offer up small plates of their specialties. At the same time, the festival stage hosts performances from groups representing the community’s many cultures.

Later in the month, follow the banjos to downtown Raleigh when International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) returns with another year of Wide Open Bluegrass, September 29th-30th. The picking, singing and dancing festival that draws more than 200,000 fans to the area will include events at Red Hat Amphitheater, and a free street festival that stretches downtown Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street and will include five more stages of music plus a dancing tent and other activities like an art market and the N.C. Whole Hog Barbecue Championship!

There’s also an abundance of great live music coming to the area! Check out Jack Johnson at Walnut Creek on the 29th, Lauryn Hill and Nas at Red Hat Amphitheater on the 20th, Alison Krauss and David Gray at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheater on the the 24th, and the NC Symphony’s accompaniment of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, September 15th-16th, where you’ll be able to watch the full movie while the orchestra plays along!

If you’re in the mood to try something new, take your friends, family or flame on a date to one of the Triangle’s new rooftop hot spots! “The Studio” at Durham’s Unscripted hotel serves poolside drinks and bites and hosts movie screenings, DJs and other events. “10th & Terrace” at Residence Inn Raleigh just opened to the public and is Raleigh’s tallest rooftop bar! The menu features a mix of local craft beer, cocktails, and wine with small plates featuring contemporary American cuisine with a North Carolina twist!
