A new, highly-anticipated featured exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art has just opened up! Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair explores the history of the Ebony Fashion Fair (1958-2009). Featuring 40 stunning ensembles (gowns, coats, suits), the exhibition includes works by designers such as Christian Dior, Givenchy, Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Bob Mackie, Alexander McQueen, Missoni, and Vivienne Westwood!
DPAC is giving us so much to be thankful for this season, starting this week! Fan-favorite astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will return for his third engagement at DPAC this Thursday. The award-winning scientist will captivate guests by sharing his insights into modern cosmology, astrophysics, and all manner of things about the universe! St. Vincent will be stopping by on the 25th for the “Fear the Future Tour,” her first extended run of dates in over two years! When you’re ready to kick the holiday cheer into gear, DPAC will also have lots in store for you! On November 24th, the holiday mash-up for the entire family, “The Hip Hop Nutcracker,” is back by popular demand. Don’t miss this contemporary re-imagining of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music. DPAC will also host Grammy-Award winner Brian Setzer and his 19-piece orchestra for their 14th annual “Christmas Rocks! Tour” on November 26. Things will warm up in December when 98° comes to town for their Christmas tour, “Let It Snow with the 98°” on the 5th. Concertgoers can expect a high-energy 98° show featuring holiday songs from their new album, as well as their beloved hits. Then on the 9th-10th, join the Carolina Ballet as they celebrate the 16th anniversary of Carolina Ballet’s family favorite, “The Nutcracker.” A holiday tradition that’s perfect for the whole family, Carolina Ballet’s is the only performance of The Nutcracker in the country with illusions created by the world-renowned magician, Rick Thomas. Marvel as beloved characters levitate, disappear, and reappear before your very eyes!
The Durham Art Walk Holiday Market is another great way to ring in the season, and it returns this weekend! The biannual Durham Art Walk’s winter edition will provide patrons with the chance to buy one-of-a-kind pieces from local artists. This weekend will also bring the 73rd Annual ABC11 Raleigh Christmas Parade on Saturday. The parade will march through downtown Raleigh for more than two hours, drawing nearly 60,000 visitors to wave to marching bands, dancers, classic cars, superheroes and Santa Claus. While you’re in Raleigh, you can also check out the Annual North Hills Tree Lighting Celebration, featuring a 41-foot-tall Christmas tree, a visit from Santa Claus, trackless train rides for kids, live music, complimentary hot chocolate and cider, and plenty of vendors on hand make this celebration an equally great event for families and a fun date idea!
When December arrives, Durhamites can celebrate in the homestead of their city at Duke Homestead’s “Christmas by Candlelight,” on the 1st & 8th. Experience Christmas in the 1870s and discover how one of the most important families in Durham history would have celebrated. Costumed interpreters take guests on a candlelit tour of the historic site, decorated for the season. Enjoy live music and dancing then move to Washington Duke’s historic home for stories, carols, cider, and other holiday traditions!
