It’s normal to feel helpless while watching news coverage of the water rescues and extensive damage that has affected neighborhoods across Eastern North Carolina. With so many people displaced and damages still to be accounted for, it’s hard to know in what areas our help will be most needed. However you feel comfortable contributing, there are so many different methods and resources to start the process of rebuilding our communities.
Donate Funds
- Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is taking donations online – For every $10 you give, the Food Bank can provide 50 meals. https://bit.ly/2NhKYXU
- The North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund is currently accepting online donations. Contributions will help with immediate unmet needs of Hurricane Florence victims. Or text Florence to 20222. https://bit.ly/2xqbMdM
- Send funds to a local animal shelter like Greenville Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, or The Humane Society of Charlotte.
Donate Goods
- CarolinaTough has an Amazon wishlist available, items purchased will be sent to a collection warehouse and transported to New Bern / other areas in Eastern NC. https://amzn.to/2xsDCGh
- Diaper Bank of North Carolina is collecting diapers and donations. Drop off at 1311 East Club Boulevard in Durham.
- Visit Eastern NC-Triangle + Solidarity’s updated list to see urgent donation requests and drop-off locations.
Volunteer
As the water recedes and damage is being assessed, don’t just jump in your car and drive to devastated areas without registering with an organization first. Assess the needs to match your skillset and get on a list to be notified when specific efforts are deployed.
- NC Diaster Volunteer Form
- Your local Habitat for Humanity.
- The American Red Cross volunteer application.

The important thing to remember is to check back with these organizations periodically over the next year. Just because the water is gone does not mean the damages are repaired, or that people are back on their feet yet.
